Lifeguard Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age
Must possess valid Lifeguard Certification with CPR for Professional Rescuer
Must possess Standard First Aid Certification
Water Safety Instructor certification recommended
Good character, integrity, assertiveness, enthusiasm, sense of humor, and patience

Responsible To: Aquatics Director

General Responsibility: To teach and help coordinate Sierra Canyon’s swimming activities and help maintain standards that lead to a safe quality program.

Specific Responsibility:
1. Work with aquatics staff to set up aquatics area prior to start of camp.
2. Teach staff their responsibilities in aquatic safety and rescue techniques during staff training.
3. Check pool equipment for safety and conduct pool chemical levels daily.
4. Engage campers and staff in enjoyable swimming activities.
5. Help children advance from beginner to more advanced swimming levels.
6. Educate campers in pool rules and enforce safety procedures.
7. Always assert responsibility with safety and utilize preventative lifeguarding.
8. Assist with overall camp activities regarding aquatics area on camp theme days.
9. Evaluate current season and staff, and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, and program for following season.
10. Be an active staff member among campers other than at activity area.
11. Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, clean-up, and sportsmanship.
12. Follow camp rules and regulations pertaining to smoking, alcoholic beverages, and illegal drugs.
13. Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
14. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

Essential Functions:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill level), and provide necessary instructions to campers.
Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the aquatics area.
Must be able to assist campers in the prevention of and in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury); observe loading and unloading of buses and vans; and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
