Counselor Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
Ability to relate to one’s peer group and accept guidance and supervision
Ability to teach and assist in various camp activities
Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, and patience
Professional appearance and well groomed
Must possess a high school diploma or be at least 18 years of age

General Responsibility: To identify and meet camper needs providing a positive camp
experience.

Specific Responsibility:
Learn the likes and dislikes of each participant.
Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem solving in the camper group.
Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff.
Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp.
Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns.
Help each participant meet the goals established by the camper for camper development.
Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety regulations.
Assist in teaching or leading and activity as assigned.
Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up, sportsmanship, and table manners.
Follow camp rules and regulations pertaining to smoking, alcoholic beverages, and illegal drugs.
Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
Maintain good public relations with campers’ parents.
These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

Essential Functions:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill level), and provide necessary instructions to campers.
Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the site and activity.
Must be able to assist campers in the prevention of and in emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury); observe loading and unloading of buses and vans; and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
